From production reporting to operational context

Mikon’s Industrial Context Platform connects and contextualises operational data from historians, ERP, LIMS and other industrial systems, creating a trusted foundation for reporting, analytics and AI.

For many years, industrial software has focused on collecting data, calculating results and producing reports.

Those capabilities are still essential. But they are no longer enough.

Modern process industries already generate enormous amounts of data from historians, ERP systems, laboratory systems, maintenance applications, spreadsheets and other operational sources. The challenge is increasingly not access to data, but understanding what the data means in the context of the operation.

That is the direction Mikon is taking.

We describe the new Mikon platform as an Industrial Context Platform.

The purpose is to create a trusted operational layer between the systems that generate data and the applications that use it.

From data to operational context

A temperature value, laboratory result or production quantity has limited value on its own.

Its real meaning comes from context:

  • Which asset did it come from?

  • Which product or batch was being produced?

  • What happened before and after the measurement?

  • Which calculations and business rules apply?

  • How does it relate to laboratory results, production orders or other operational events?

Mikon structures these relationships across signals, products, batches, equipment, assets, hierarchies, time, genealogy and calculations.

The result is a consistent operational model that can be used across reporting, analytics and decision support.

One operational foundation, many applications

The new Mikon platform is designed as a headless, API-first platform.

This means that the operational data model is no longer tied to one specific user interface.

The same trusted operational information can be used in:

  • Mikon applications

  • custom HTML applications

  • Microsoft Excel

  • Grafana

  • Power BI

  • mobile applications

  • other enterprise systems

  • AI-assisted operational tools

This gives industrial organisations greater freedom to choose the right presentation and workflow for different users, while maintaining one consistent operational data foundation.

Reporting remains fundamental

Production reporting, laboratory information management and emissions reporting remain important parts of Mikon.

In fact, reliable reporting becomes even more important as organisations move towards advanced analytics and AI.

AI cannot compensate for unclear definitions, inconsistent calculations or poorly structured operational data.

Trusted reporting creates the foundation.

Operational context makes the data understandable.

Analytics and AI can then build on that foundation.

Industrial AI should start with industrial knowledge

We believe AI in industry should support operators and engineers rather than attempt to replace their expertise.

That requires AI systems to work with the organisation's own trusted operational knowledge: process data, laboratory results, production history, maintenance information and technical documentation.

This thinking is behind our work on Operational Intelligence and Ask Your Factory.

The objective is simple: make it easier to understand what is happening, why it is happening and what information is relevant when operational decisions need to be made.

A new mikon.no

Our new website reflects this broader direction.

Mikon has evolved from a production reporting system into a platform for operational context, reporting, analytics and AI-assisted decision support.

The technology has changed considerably.

The underlying principle has not:

Reliable operational decisions start with trusted operational data.
